Martin completed his PhD in Physics in 2005, winning the University of Melbourne Chancellor's Prize and the ASRP Thesis Medal. From there he started working with the scanning x-ray fluorescence microscope at the Advanced Photon Source in Chicago, where he developed methods for studying metals distributions in biological specimens, including Differential Phase Contrast (DPC) imaging and X-ray Fluorescence Tomography. In 2008 Martin moved to the Australian Synchrotron to pursue the possibilities of fast-scanning measurements, with a strong focus on x-ray fluorescence tomography of biological specimens.
